Q&A round

SEO free link or paid listing: nine local questions

Owners ask us the same things at the counter and in their inbox. These are the nine that come up most, answered in the order we would act on them.

Start with what is free. A claimed profile on Google Business Profile, Bing Places for Business and Apple Business Connect costs nothing and sits in front of the people who are searching right now.

Do those first. They are your digital shop sign.

After that, each extra paid directory has to justify itself by sending customers or by tying up loose ends in your NAP, the name, address and phone details that should read identically everywhere.

Nine questions, answered

Is an SEO free link from a directory worth the effort?

Usually the effort is small and the value modest. A free listing fixes NAP consistency and may send a trickle of people. Treat it as hygiene, not growth, and put your time into the profiles customers actually open.

Do I need to pay for a listing to rank on the map?

No. Map results lean on proximity, profile completeness and reviews. A paid listing can add exposure inside that directory, yet nobody can promise it moves your map position, so judge it by the enquiries it sends.

What exactly is NAP consistency?

It means your business name, address and phone number are written the same way everywhere they appear. Suite 4 in one place and Ste. 4 in another is a small mismatch that you can usually tidy in an afternoon.

Which directories matter now?

Start with Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect and Facebook. After that, add your trade's own association or industry directory. Generic national lists of thousands of businesses matter least.

Is a directory link the same as a backlink?

A directory link is a backlink, but mostly a weak one, since directories link to everyone. An editorial placement on a relevant site is chosen by a publisher and read by an audience, which is why it is priced differently.

Should I pay a company to submit me to 200 directories?

We would not. Bulk submission creates the thin footprint Google targets in its spam updates, and you then have 200 profiles to keep accurate. A dozen well-chosen ones are easier to maintain.

When would I buy a backlink instead of a listing?

When the free basics are done and a service page needs support, for example a clinic page about implants. Then one or two placements on relevant sites can help, in the way our budget page walks through.

Do reviews count more than links?

For the map pack, reviews and profile quality usually carry more weight than links. Ask each satisfied customer yourself, on the day, while the job is fresh, and reply to every review.

How do I check a directory is not junk?

Search the site on Google, look at its DR and traffic, and read a few listings. Our free DR checker steps turn that into a ten-minute routine.

Order of play

Free profiles, then consistency, then reviews, then links

Links are the last rung of this ladder, not the first. Skip a rung and the next one does less for you.

A quick rule for mismatched details

Pick one spelling and keep it. Small gaps matter less than missing profiles, yet cleaning them is cheap, so do it when you have a free evening.

Write the format on a card and tape it to the till. Whoever fills in the next form uses it.

What to keep in a drawer

Keep a one-page sheet: legal name, address, phone, hours, website, categories, a short description and two photos. Update it first, then copy to every profile.

That sheet is also what a Search Console, Ahrefs or Semrush review of your listings starts from.
